20. HEAVY SUGAR

The man with the monocle is gravy.

An easy buck

He doesn’t want to kiss or touch:

Just lie back, miss

Hands at your sides, that’s it.

Open your legs a little wider

Under the light where it is brighter

So I can see

And I can study

Sniff and inspect

Your pretty little cunny.

“THAT CARTOON DICK THINKS that ‘crime doesn’t pay’, does he? Honey, these days it’s about the only thing that does pay.” I take a bite out of my hotdog and grin at Lili Belle sitting beside me on the park bench. “It ain’t such a bad gig either. Last night I fell asleep while the Monocle Man was doing his thing. He didn’t bother waking me up, just left a fat tip under my left cheek.”

Lili Belle leans forward as I open up my handbag. “That’s some heavy sugar!” she whistles, impressed.

“You said it, sister!” I snap my bag shut.

“You must have to deal with some pretty ugly mugs, though.”

I shrug. “If they’re really ugly, I just think about how kind and selfless I’m being. If they’re mean or too rough, though, I call for Eddie and he gives them a good sock in the beezer.”

“Eddie’s a good egg,” Lili Belle muses. “I sure am glad he told me where you were. I was worried about you.”

“Sure,” she nods, chuckling. “Greasing their gums.”

“What have they been saying?”

“Well, for starters, they think you and Eddie ran off and got married.”

“That’s a hot one!” I laugh. “Is that what Mr. Manchester thinks too?”

“Dunno. Mr. Manchester’s the only one who never mentions you.”

“Oh.” I stretch my lips into a smile as I scramble for something to say. “Well, who’s the specialty now?”

“Betty Bop.” Lili Belle takes a sip of her soda, wrinkling her nose at the gang of seagulls jostling for a bite of her hotdog. “She’s a one-legged tap dancer. A real swell girl, almost as cute as Ruby Keeler.”

“Is Evelyn still working in hatcheck?” I ask. Might as well twist my own knife.

Lili Belle nods. “I’m not sure for how long, though. She’s not looking too well and boy, is she starting to show! Luckily she’s behind the counter so the customers don’t really notice, but Joe and Mr. Manchester do and they don’t like it.” She shakes her head sadly. “Mr. Manchester’s always been nice to me, but I’ve been thinking lately that maybe he ain’t so good.”

“What do you mean?” I ask. “Did he bounce her?”

“Yes. He told her that the baby ain’t his. Both him and Joe are trying to pin it on Eddie. All Joe had to do was whisper in Penny’s ear and suddenly the whole joint is buzzing about Eddie knocking up your sister, running out with you, and the both of you leaving Evelyn holding the bag. Who cares about the truth when the lie is so juicy?”

“So Mr. Manchester gave Evelyn the air,
